Students of MIT School, Pune join hands with Jigrr for CYG’s Environmental Awareness Programme
Pune, Aug 9th 2008: 71 schools across Pune city have participated in CYG Pune 2008’s Environmental Awareness Program for schools. The program aims at restoring and preserving environmental values and concerns in school children. This program was introduced on 22nd Feb 2008 by CYG Pune 2008. Students of the Community Medicine Department of Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College came forward to volunteer for this cause and have been conducting workshops for environmental awareness in schools.

MIT School, Pune welcomed “Jigrr”, the official Mascot of the Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008 this morning with a progression of colorful rangoli presentations. Jigrr was escorted by the Principal of MIT School, Kothrud, Mrs Manisha Sablok who said,” The Commonwealth Youth Games initiatives like these are leaving a long lasting positive impact on young minds. With the help of their art teacher, the students have prepared artwork and paintings using Jigrr as a medium to send out environmental messages”.

Also Present on the occasion was Mrs. Varsha Vaidya, Coordinator, Dept. of Community Medicine, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune, along with 4th and 6th semester medical students who have conducted interactive sessions with students of MIT and other schools on topics like global warming, air and water pollution, solid waste management, etc. to increase awareness among school children. “We are thankful to Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008 for giving us this opportunity, as the medical college students are enjoying working with school children” said Mrs. Vaidya.

Ms. Jyoti Prabha, Project Officer-Green Games, Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008 said, “The Environmental Awareness Program in schools that started in February is now in full momentum. We are now in phase 3 of this 4-phase program i.e. environmental audit of schools. At the end of phase 4, one school will be awarded the “CYG Pune 2008 Green School Award”

Also, children of the school planted saplings in the school premises. The event wrapped up with a fun-filled and informative puppet show featuring the characters “Chintoo” and “Chinki”, who spoke about environmental concerns like plastic usage, pollution etc. The puppet show was performed by Wintergreen Productions, Pune.
