Launch of the school programme, “Bond Forever”
On 22nd February 2008, CYG Pune launched the special school programme “Bond Forever” as a part of the Games. Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP and Chairman of the OC, CYG Pune 2008, addressed the august gathering and introduced the programme of “Bond Forever” - learning about a commonwealth country and doing a project on this country and cheering their athletes during the Games.

The objective of the programme is to bring the commonwealth countries of the world closer together and help forge bonds of friendship and support that will last forever. Principals from schools across the city were invited to participate in this programme to showcase their support for the Games and make all the delegations from the commonwealth countries feel at home.

The programme received an overwhelming response with more than 75 schools turning up for the launch with most of the schools signing up on the spot. The enthusiasm of the schools clearly showed in their eager suggestions and ideas to make this programme a success.

As CYG is a Green Games Initiative, a school programme for environmental awareness was introduced. Schools will be evaluated on eco friendly measures followed by them and based on this a prize will be initiated for the “CYG Pune 2008 Green School Award”.

The second meeting for the school programme concluded on 5th March 2008, where the countries were allocated to the respective schools through a fair draw of lots. The schools were very excited about their respective countries and already started planning for their projects.

Enthusiastic medical students from Bharti Vidyapeeth also volunteered to help out the schools with the environmental awareness project.

All the schools agreed that the best way to make young athletes from around the world feel comfortable in our city would be to welcome them with their young counterparts from the schools of Pune. The children of Pune would be the best ambassadors for the city and the Games. They will be able to make friends for life with youngsters from across the globe and become a part of Pune’s sporting history.
The Games are now over. This site is for reference only. For the latest news and information on the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games please visit the CGF website.
