Paryavaran Mitra Program by CYG Pune 2008 sets afloat with Save Energy initiative
15th May 2008: CYG Pune 2008 in association with Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Pune University initiated the "Paryavaran Mitra" campaign on Thursday 15th May 2008 at Bhairavnath Mandir – Baner, especially to educate the residents of the fringe villages. This programme has support from University of Pune (UoP), Sarathi, Dada Kondke Foundation and Vasundhara Swatchta Abhiyan.

The main objective of this program is to highlight the cause of Global Warming through Energy Conservation. Under the Paryavaran Mitra programme around 1000 volunteers from 40 areas will be selected and trained primarily on environmental awareness in the month of June. These volunteers will work towards making the slums clean and green. The award winning slum will be honored with the Clean n' Green Slum during the games in October 2008.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP and Chairman CYG Pune, 2008 and CWG Delhi, 2010 said, "Save energy should be a people's movement especially in the fringe villages of Pune city and CYG is supporting this cause which will benefit the environment and reduce Global warming".

As a part of the initiative, the official mascot for CYG Pune 2008 – JIGRR distributed the CFL bulbs to the local residents with the objective - "Reduce global warming by saving electricity". A street play based on energy conservation was also organised to commemorate the launch of Paryavaran Mitra. Dr. Chandrakant B Garudkar spoke about Vasundhra Swachata Abhiyan and its initiative towards the upliftment of the people residing in the fringe villages of Pune.
