Overwhelming response by Puneites towards CYG’s Green Initiative on World Environment Day
June 5th 2008: To commemorate the World Environment Day on June 5th, Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008 organised a Tree Plantation and River Bed Cleaning Drive in the city, with an aim to enhance public attention and activate nature conservation and environmental protection.

The plantation drive started at 7.30 a.m. at Vetal Tekdi, Paud Road at the hands of Mrs. Rajlaxmi Bhosale, Hon’ble Mayor of Pune, who planted the first sapling, along with Lt. Gen. Ashok Kapur, ADG, CYG Pune ’08 and Jigrr – the Official Mascot of CYG Pune’ 08.

CYG Team in association with the Forest Department, Pune Division and the PMC initiated this drive which will see around 25,000 saplings being planted around the city. Speaking on the occasion Mrs. Bhosale said “I am pleased with CYG’s green initiative and also request citizens to do their bit towards environment protection and plant trees around the year.”

Following the tree plantation drive, CYG Team organised a river bed cleaning drive along the banks of the Mutha River at Lakdi Pul, Deccan Gymkhana. Over 1200 volunteers from Bharti Vidyapeeth Medical College, Jetking Info, Tata Business Solutions Service (TBSS), Jain Boarding, Pathanjali Institute, CYG’s Team Pune, Paryavaran Team along with Puneites from all walks of life participated in this drive. Lt. Gen. Ashok Kapur thanked the volunteers and citizens for their support towards both the drives carried out by CYG.
